Federal, Sindh Leaders Reject Wheat Imports, Set Course for National Policy and Farmer Support

The shift follows a sharp drop in Sindh’s harvest blamed on the absence of a support price.

Overview

  • In Karachi on Sept. 19, Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain met Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah with senior officials to review production, stocks and policy.
  • Both sides agreed to draft a National Wheat Policy with provincial input that prioritizes fair support prices, stronger procurement and strategic reserves.
  • Officials reported existing stocks should last until the next harvest, citing roughly 1.27–1.39 MMT in Sindh and about 4.70 MMT nationwide.
  • Sindh’s output fell from 4.592 MMT last season to about 3.45–3.54 MMT, while sowing was said to have dropped around 6%.
  • Leaders said measures will channel benefits directly to growers, noted open-market prices of roughly Rs3,000–4,000 per 40kg, and tasked teams to finalize incentives and reserve-building plans.
