Federal Security Chiefs Begin Coordinated Inspections in Sinaloa

The inspections seek to prepare federal oversight and coordination ahead of construction of a federally funded 2,640-place prison in Sinaloa.

Overview

  • Omar García Harfuch announced that this week the heads of the Secretariat of Security (SSPC), the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) will carry out coordinated supervisory visits across Sinaloa, with the defense secretary attending on Tuesday.
  • The on-the-ground agenda includes verifying deployments of security forces, reviewing the functioning of the Centro de Comando, Control, Comunicación y Cómputo (C4) and inspecting the terrain designated for a new penal facility.
  • The visits are part of a broader federal plan to build six new penitentiary centers nationwide, with Sinaloa slated to be first and its facility planned for 2,640 places funded by federal resources.
  • Officials say the effort aims to strengthen prison control and stop criminal organizations from operating from inside facilities, a priority heightened after violent incidents at the Mazatlán prison earlier in October.
  • The inspections remain at the oversight and site-preparation stage this week and will test how federal, state and municipal authorities share responsibilities, a process that could change deployments, resource allocations and the timing of construction.
