Federal Prosecutors Charge U-Haul Driver Accused of Reversing Toward Coast Guard in Alameda

A detention-preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 10 in Oakland federal court.

Overview

  • Prosecutors charged Brendan Munro Thompson, 26, with assaulting federal officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
  • A criminal complaint alleges Thompson accelerated in reverse toward a line of U.S. Coast Guard personnel at the Coast Guard Island bridge on Oct. 23.
  • Coast Guard personnel fired at the truck when it did not stop, and Thompson later received treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot injury.
  • Footage reported by local media shows the U-Haul idling about 30 feet from the agents before quickly backing toward them as numerous shots were heard.
  • Thompson was previously booked on a local misdemeanor after an alleged escape attempt at Highland Hospital, and if convicted on the federal charge could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
