Overview
- U.S. District Judge Orlando L. Garcia issued a preliminary injunction requiring 14 named school districts to take down Ten Commandments displays by Dec. 1 and halting enforcement of SB 10 in those districts.
- The order stems from a lawsuit by multi-faith and nonreligious families represented by the ACLU of Texas, Americans United, and the Freedom From Religion Foundation, arguing the postings violate the Establishment Clause.
- On the same day, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed new suits against Round Rock ISD and Leander ISD over alleged noncompliance, after previously suing Galveston ISD.
- Round Rock ISD confirmed it declined to post the displays while awaiting legal guidance, while Leander ISD said it has received donations and is implementing the law.
- A separate August injunction by Judge Fred Biery blocked SB 10 for other districts, appeals are set for January at the Fifth Circuit, and similar laws in Louisiana and Arkansas have been blocked by federal courts.
