Federal Government Rejects Emergency Heritage Bid for Victoria Park Stadium Site

The minister will install an independent facilitator to help shape cultural safeguards during assessment of longer-term protection bids.

Overview

  • The rejected application was a Section 9 emergency request targeting drilling and drilling-related infrastructure at the stadium and nearby National Aquatic Centre sites.
  • Murray Watt directed his department to appoint an independent mediator to work with GIICA, Indigenous representatives and community groups to avoid harm to cultural heritage.
  • Three further applications, including Section 10 bids for longer-term protection, remain under consideration after five were lodged in total and one was withdrawn.
  • The Queensland government welcomed the decision and says site earthworks for the $3.8 billion, 63,000-seat venue are expected to begin midyear.
  • Save Victoria Park said the ruling does not end the protection effort and has planned a January 31 protest while stadium planning continues.
