Overview
- The federal government granted approval for the new MU distinguishing code on July 2–3 following a formal application by Bavaria’s transport ministry under Christian Bernreiter.
- The addition addresses a shortage of M plate combinations as roughly one million vehicles are registered across Munich city and Landkreis München.
- Munich city has used the MUC code since December 2023 for standard vehicles but excludes seasonal, historic and electric plates due to the eight-character limit.
- County registration offices must complete technical and administrative software updates before MU plates can be issued, with a rollout expected in late 2025.
- The new code will allow personalized combinations such as MU-UH, MU-ND and MU-MM, expanding customization options for local vehicle owners.
