Overview

  • Federal agents from the ATF joined NYPD officers and Kentucky State Police on June 10 to execute search warrants at the Kentucky estate of John Woeltz and William Duplessie.
  • Woeltz and Duplessie pleaded not guilty last month to sealed indictments charging them with kidnapping and torturing an Italian cryptocurrency investor in Manhattan.
  • Prosecutors allege the suspects used brutal tactics including sawing Carturan’s leg, electric shocks, forced crack cocaine use and sexual humiliation.
  • Carturan escaped on May 23 by running barefoot from the SoHo townhouse and flagging down a traffic officer for help.
  • Two NYPD detectives have been reassigned to modified duty pending an Internal Affairs review over unauthorized off-duty security work for the suspects.
