Febraban Requires Banks to Alert Customers Up to Five Days Before Interbank Automatic Debits

The self-regulatory measure seeks to curb unrecognized interbank debits that have driven complaints and lawsuits.

Overview

  • The Council of Self-Regulation approved the rule for its 25 signatory banks and set a 30-day implementation deadline from notification.
  • Advance notices must be sent by the bank where the account will be debited via the app, SMS, or another verifiable channel.
  • Each notice must identify the receiving institution and the amount to be charged and include a service contact or procedure for inquiries.
  • The debit can only occur after the notification window if the customer does not cancel with the institution that initiated the charge.
  • The move builds on a 2020 CMN resolution that places authorization responsibility on the requesting institution and follows a rise in disputes over unrecognized debits.
