Feast of San Gennaro Opens in Little Italy for 99th Year

The 11-day celebration, rooted in a 1926 Neapolitan block party, features religious rites, street food, live music.

Overview

  • The festival runs September 11–21 along Mulberry Street, spanning roughly 11 blocks in Manhattan’s Little Italy.
  • Festivities opened Thursday with the blessing of the stands as vendors and performers launched daily food and entertainment, including Jessa V & Band, opera nights and karaoke with DJ Bobby.
  • The Grand Procession begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, with actor-comedian Joe Piscopo serving as grand marshal and floats and a gondola featured.
  • A feast-day Mass at the Church of the Most Precious Blood on Friday, September 19 at 6 p.m. will include a procession of the statue of Saint San Gennaro through the neighborhood.
  • The NYC Department of Transportation notes multi-block street closures around Mulberry and Mott Streets, including stretches of Canal, Hester, Grand and Broome, during the festival.
