FDNY Firefighter Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash on FDR Drive

The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is probing the crash in search of the driver who fled the scene.

  • Matthew Goicochea, a 31-year-old member of Ladder Company 41, was riding northbound on the FDR Drive near East 25th Street when he lost control of his motorcycle just before 4 a.m.
  • After Goicochea fell onto the roadway, an unknown vehicle struck him and drove off without stopping, and investigators say they do not yet have a description of the car.
  • No arrests have been made since the early-morning collision and detectives continue to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses.
  • Goicochea joined the FDNY in September 2022 and received the Thomas Wylie Medal last year for rescuing an unconscious victim from a Bronx fire.
