FDA Warns of Overheating Risk with Philips' DreamStation 2 Sleep Apnea Machines

Following the warning, Philips' stock experiences a significant drop, marking another setback for the company after a major recall in 2021.

  • Philips' DreamStation 2, a device for treating sleep apnea, can overheat and potentially start burning while in use, warns the FDA.
  • The FDA has received 270 reports of problems with the DreamStation 2 between August and November 15, 2023.
  • To reduce the chances of overheating, the FDA advises users to regularly clean the device, place it on a flat surface, keep it away from flammable materials when in use, and unplug it when not in use.
  • Philips has previously recalled more than 5 million other CPAP machines in 2021 due to a different issue where foam inside the units was breaking off and potentially causing injuries.
  • Following the FDA's warning, Philips' stock fell nearly 5%.
