FDA Issues Recall of 83,800 Bags of Indonesian Frozen Shrimp for Possible Cesium-137 Contamination

Investigators are examining processing, packing or shipping as possible sources of exposure.

Overview

  • Direct Source Seafood LLC’s Dec. 19 recall covers frozen raw shrimp sold under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brands and imported from Indonesia.
  • The affected bags were distributed across 17 states, including sales at Price Chopper (Market 32) in six Northeast states and at Jewel-Osco, Albertsons, Safeway and Lucky stores in 11 others.
  • Products include 1-lb Market 32 bags with best-by dates from April 22–27, 2027, and 2-lb Waterfront Bistro bags dated April 25–26, 2027, sold on or after late June and mid-July 2025.
  • The FDA reports no illnesses to date and advises consumers not to eat the shrimp, urging them to discard it or return it for a refund.
  • Earlier in the investigation, Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati was placed on an import alert after positive Cs-137 tests, and the FDA says its broader probe remains active.
