FDA Flags Cesium-137 in Imported Shrimp as Walmart Pulls Great Value Lots

The agency has restricted imports from the Indonesian supplier pending further testing after detecting low-level contamination below its intervention threshold.

Overview

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection detected cesium-137 in shrimp containers from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah and Miami, prompting FDA action.
  • The FDA measured approximately 68 Bq/kg of Cs-137 in a retained shipment, well under the agency’s 1,200 Bq/kg intervention level, yet warned against unnecessary exposure over time.
  • The FDA advised consumers, distributors and retailers not to eat, serve or sell three Great Value raw frozen shrimp lots sold at Walmart: 8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1, all dated 15/03/2027.
  • Walmart removed the specified products from stores in 13 states and is offering refunds or returns for customers who purchased the identified items.
  • The FDA placed PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati on an import-restricted list for automatic detention as sampling and supply‑chain checks continue and positive containers were denied U.S. entry.
