Overview
- The FDA added nine more items in its Nov. 24 update, bringing the list to about 19 cookware products that can leach lead into food.
- Newly identified brands and distributors include Sonex, Silver Horse, IKM, Shata Traders and Lotus Mom, alongside earlier Tiger White products.
- Testing at U.S. retailers pinned specific items to stores such as Punjab Supermarket in Maryland, India Metro Hypermarket and India Cash and Carry in Fremont, Balady Foods in Brooklyn and Patel Brothers in Illinois.
- Many implicated pots, pans and kadais are made from Hindalium/Indalium-type aluminum–brass alloys that are known to leach lead and are not used in U.S.-market cookware.
- Consumers are told to throw away listed items, not refurbish or donate them, and retailers are urged to halt sales and use the FDA’s lead-leach testing protocol as surveillance continues and the list may grow.
