FDA Expands Shrimp Recalls Over Cesium-137 as Indonesian Supplier Faces Import Alert

Officials advise discarding listed lots during an active investigation into the contamination source.

Overview

  • AquaStar recalled 26,460 six-ounce cocktail shrimp packages sold at Walmart and nearly 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado cooked shrimp, adding to earlier recalls tied to Walmart, Southwind Foods, Beaver Street Fisheries and H&N Group.
  • The FDA classified the actions as Class II recalls, citing a low likelihood of serious harm but potential reversible effects from exposure.
  • All implicated products were processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati of Indonesia, which is now on an import alert as shipments linked to the firm are refused entry.
  • CBP flagged possible contamination at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah, and FDA testing confirmed cesium-137 in one sample at about 68 Bq/kg, far below the 1,200 Bq/kg intervention level.
  • No illnesses have been reported, the FDA says none of the shrimp that tested positive entered U.S. commerce, and consumers are instructed to throw away or return affected lots for refunds.
