FDA Elevates Shrimp Recalls to Class II, Places Indonesian Processor on Import Alert After Cesium-137 Tests

Regulators say detected radiation levels were below intervention thresholds with no illnesses reported.

Overview

  • The FDA placed Indonesia’s PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati on an import alert that blocks its shrimp from entering the U.S. while the investigation proceeds.
  • AquaStar recalled 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp sold July 24–Aug. 11 in multiple states, with specific UPCs and lot codes identified.
  • Recalls by Beaver Street Fisheries and H & N Group were classified as Class II on Aug. 28, indicating a remote probability of serious adverse health consequences.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection first detected cesium-137 in containers at several ports, and the FDA says no product that tested positive entered U.S. commerce.
  • Consumers are advised not to eat the affected shrimp and to discard it or return it for a refund due to concerns about long-term exposure risk despite levels below the FDA’s Derived Intervention Level.
