Overview

  • The FDA upgraded the recall of GreenWise Organic frozen whole blueberries and mixed berries to Class I, its highest severity level, after linking the products to an E. coli O145:H28 outbreak.
  • Health agencies have reported 12 illnesses and four hospitalizations with no deaths and advised consumers not to eat, sell, or serve the recalled 10‑ounce and 48‑ounce GreenWise bags.
  • The recalled products were sold at Publix stores in eight U.S. states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
  • The trace to Chilean supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. began when the company withdrew a presumptively positive lot in early July and Publix expanded the retail recall on July 29; the investigation into the contamination source remains active.
  • Officials urge consumers to discard or return affected bags and to clean surfaces that contacted the fruit because E. coli O145:H28 can cause severe gastrointestinal illness and, in some cases, a dangerous kidney complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome.
