Overview

  • On July 1, the FDA upgraded Alma Pak International LLC’s June 9 voluntary recall of 400 boxes (12,000 pounds) of organic blueberries to Class I, indicating a reasonable probability of serious illness or death.
  • Routine testing by the Georgia-based company detected Listeria monocytogenes in the finished blueberry product.
  • All affected fruit bears lot numbers 13325 G1060 and 13325 G1096 and was shipped to a single North Carolina customer.
  • Listeriosis can cause mild flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals and severe invasive disease—such as meningitis or sepsis—in pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65 and immunocompromised people.
  • Retailers and consumers are urged to inspect existing stocks for the recalled lots and to seek medical advice if they develop symptoms consistent with listeriosis.
