FDA Class II Recall Covers 1.5 Million Bags of Shredded Cheese in 31 States

Potential metal fragments in supplier raw material prompted the action across dozens of store brands.

Overview

  • Great Lakes Cheese initiated the voluntary downstream recall on Oct. 3, and the FDA reclassified it as Class II on Dec. 1.
  • More than 260,000 cases — over 1.5 million bags — include mostly low‑moisture part‑skim mozzarella plus Italian‑style, pizza‑style and blended shreds.
  • Products were distributed in 31 states and Puerto Rico at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Aldi, Publix, Sprouts and H‑E‑B under multiple private labels.
  • Consumers are advised not to eat the affected bags, to discard or return them for a refund, and to check sell‑by dates running into January through March 2026.
  • No illnesses have been reported, the supplier tied to the contaminated raw material has not been publicly identified, and the FDA says the investigation remains active.
