FDA Blocks Two Indonesian Suppliers After Cesium-137 Found in Cloves as Shrimp Recalls Expand

The agency is barring entries from both firms after cesium-137 turned up in detained cloves, taking precaution despite levels well below its intervention limit.

Overview

  • PT Natural Java Spice and PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati were placed on Import Alert #99-51, preventing their products from entering the U.S. until they demonstrate corrective actions.
  • The FDA measured 732.43 Bq/kg of cesium-137 in a detained clove sample from PT Natural Java Spice, below the 1,200 Bq/kg Derived Intervention Level, and the shipment did not enter commerce.
  • The FDA reports no contaminated spices reached consumers and no illnesses have been reported, and it continues to investigate with Indonesian authorities and international experts.
  • Shrimp recalls that began in August widened this week, including products under Kroger and AquaStar brands, following detections tied to the Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati.
  • Screening at major ports such as Los Angeles/Long Beach, Houston, Miami, and Savannah has flagged shipments, and the IAEA has indicated a nearby industrial site may be a possible source under review.
