Zepbound, a new weight-loss medication, is set to be widely available in the US by the end of the year after FDA approval. The drug, made by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, was originally branded as Mounjaro for diabetes, its use has now been extended for weight loss.
The mechanism of Zepbound involves the activation of two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, which decrease appetite, slow digestion, increase feelings of fullness, and encourage the release of insulin. These properties make Zepbound an effective tool for weight management.
Eligibility for Zepbound includes adults who are obese, overweight with at least one weight-related health condition. The FDA suggests that the drug should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The approval of Zepbound was based on the results of clinical trials in which participants experienced substantial weight loss when taking the drug as an addition to diet and exercise. On average, people taking the highest dose lost around 48 pounds compared to an average of 7 pounds on placebo.
