FDA Adds Jiva Organic to Lead-Tainted Cinnamon List, Bringing Recalls to 12 Brands

Regulators are expanding retail and import testing after FDA samples flagged elevated lead in a lot distributed by Spicey World USA.

Overview

  • The FDA updated its public health alert on Sept. 12 to include Jiva Organic ground cinnamon after retail sampling detected elevated lead.
  • The affected product is lot AF-CINP/822 with a best-by date of July 2025, distributed by Spicey World USA and sold at Taj Supermarket in Sacramento.
  • With the addition of Jiva, 12 ground-cinnamon brands are recalled or under alert, including products sold at Dollar Tree, Save-A-Lot, Patel Brothers, and other retailers.
  • Consumers are urged to discard listed spices and avoid purchasing them, and those who may have been exposed should consult a healthcare provider; no injuries tied to the Jiva product were confirmed as of the alert date.
  • The FDA says it will continue testing at retail and at import, and a separate Sprout Organics baby food pouch lot was recalled over potential elevated lead.
