FDA Adds Brands to Warning Over Imported Cookware That May Leach Lead

The agency says some items remain on store shelves because distributors have not been identified.

Overview

  • The FDA expanded its Sept. 12 advisory after testing showed certain aluminum, brass, and alloy cookware can release lead during cooking or storage.
  • Newly flagged items include Tiger White kadai/karahi pots, Silver Horse Aluminium Mathar Kadai 26 and Aluminium Milk Pan 4, and a JK Vallabhdas Aluminium Kadai.
  • Tested products were purchased at specific retailers, including Mannan Supermarket in Jamaica, NY; Patel Brothers in Schaumburg, IL; and INDIACO in Hoffman Estates, IL, with product labels and IDs published by the FDA.
  • The agency links the risk to alloys marketed as Hindalium or Indalium and urges consumers to discard affected cookware and contact healthcare providers if concerned.
  • Retailers and distributors are advised to use FDA lead leach testing or consult the agency, with officials stressing no safe level of lead exposure and ongoing sampling that could add more products to the list.
