FCC Queries Automakers on Connected Car Systems Misuse by Domestic Abusers

Inquiry Follows Report on Weaponization of Car Apps in Abusive Relationships

  • FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has sent letters to nine major automakers and three wireless service providers, seeking information on their connected car systems and how they may be misused by domestic abusers.
  • The letters were prompted by a New York Times report detailing how connected car apps have been weaponized in abusive relationships, allowing for unwanted stalking and harassment.
  • Rosenworcel has asked the companies whether they have policies in place to remove access to connected apps and other features if a request is made by someone who is being abused.
  • The FCC is also inquiring whether the companies remove access even from someone whose name is on the vehicle's title.
  • The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a large trade association, has stated that misuse of connected vehicle technology to stalk or harass people is not acceptable and that the industry is considering how to best broaden federal or state policies to help prevent such incidents.
