FBI, Webster Police Offer $25,000 Reward in 1978 Disappearance of Andrew Amato

Officials hope new leads emerge after a recent underwater search in Rhode Island produced no breakthrough.

Overview

  • The reward, announced Tuesday by FBI Boston with Webster police, seeks tips leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
  • Andrew “Andy” Amato was reported missing on Sept. 30, 1978, after his sister and cousin left briefly to get help near the Ash Street Trailer Park in Webster and returned to find him gone.
  • Investigators have conducted nearly 100 interviews and chased dozens of leads nationwide, including an underwater search in Burrillville, Rhode Island, earlier this month.
  • At the time, Andrew was 3'6" with blue eyes and short blonde hair, had a one-inch scar at the right hairline and a mole behind his right ear, and wore a maroon snorkel jacket, jeans, a white Mickey Mouse T-shirt, and brown shoes with a jogger stripe.
  • Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or Webster Police at 508-943-1212 ext. 1250, or submit tips at tips.fbi.gov.
