FBI Says HBCU Threats Were Hoax Calls as Campuses Lift Lockdowns

Investigators say the threats appear to be hoax calls with no credible danger.

Overview

  • At least six to seven HBCUs reported threats on Sept. 11, prompting lockdowns or shelter-in-place orders at Alabama State, Hampton, Virginia State, Southern, Clark Atlanta and Bethune-Cookman, with nearby Spelman and Morehouse taking precautions.
  • The FBI said it is aware of “hoax threat calls” and has “no information to indicate a credible threat,” while campus, local, state and federal agencies continued credibility assessments.
  • No injuries were reported; several lockdowns were lifted the same day, yet some campuses canceled classes and events, including Southern University through the weekend and Hampton through Friday.
  • Alabama State resumed regular operations on Sept. 12 after the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency determined there was no credible threat and said the warnings originated from an email falsely reporting an active threat.
  • Universities tightened security and coordinated with federal partners as lawmakers and civil-rights leaders, including the Congressional Black Caucus, urged swift federal action, with officials noting no link to the prior day’s Utah Valley University shooting.
