The messages have been sent to both adults and students, including high school and college attendees in multiple states.
TextNow, a mobile provider, identified and shut down accounts linked to these messages, which were sent from anonymous numbers.
Authorities have not reported any violence linked to the messages, but they urge recipients to report any threats.
