FBI Probes ICE Shooting at Phoenix Traffic Stop as Agency Cites Rising Threats

Federal investigators are reviewing the Phoenix stop following ICE warnings of rising assaults on officers.

Overview

  • ICE says an officer fired two shots after a stopped vehicle began to pull away in his direction on I-17 near Dove Valley Road around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
  • The driver was identified as Jose Garcia-Sorto of Honduras, who was hospitalized for a wound and described as in stable condition, while the officer was evaluated at a hospital.
  • The FBI’s Phoenix Field Office is leading the investigation, and officials have not clarified whether the officer was struck or whether the driver was hit by gunfire.
  • ICE issued a statement blaming political rhetoric and activist calls to resist arrest, claiming a more than 1,000% increase in assaults on officers including vehicle rammings.
  • Separate from Phoenix, DHS says an ICE officer in Ontario, California, fired defensive shots at a driver who reversed toward officers, and DHS and the FBI are investigating after the subject fled and abandoned the vehicle.
