FBI Offers $25,000 Reward in Border-Area Hiker Shooting and Robbery

The agency seeks public tips to identify two suspects who fled toward Mexico after the January attack.

  • The assault occurred around 10:35 a.m. on Jan. 22 about 1,000 feet north of the international boundary in Valley of the Moon near the San Diego–Imperial county line.
  • Two unknown Hispanic male suspects fired at four hikers, struck one, then held the group at gunpoint and took valuables.
  • The wounded hiker suffered a leg injury described as non-life-threatening and was airlifted to a San Diego hospital.
  • The suspects were last seen moving southwest toward the Mexican border and remain at large in an active investigation.
  • Tips can be submitted anonymously at tips.fbi.gov, to any FBI field office, or through the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for a reward of up to $25,000 leading to identification, arrest, and conviction.
