FBI Arrests Saudi OpenAI Engineer for Planting Hidden Audio Recorder

Federal prosecutors say the case is a counterintelligence priority after OpenAI used its own AI to trace an encrypted device found in a San Francisco executive conference room.

Overview

  • OpenAI security discovered a thumb-sized encrypted audio recorder wrapped in toilet paper and plugged into a TV USB port on Sept. 30 after investigators determined the device had been installed around Sept. 28.
  • Company investigators used internal AI models to analyze the device’s forensics, trace it to a specific employee, and refer the matter to the FBI, which then placed a hidden camera that later captured the accused looking behind the TV.
  • Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national who worked at OpenAI since July 2025, was arrested on Oct. 9 and charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications; the charge carries up to five years in prison and fines.
  • Prosecutors say they found a second, similar recorder in an unattended bag containing Alfozan’s wallet and ID and that chatbot and productivity-tool queries between Sept. 24 and Sept. 30 sought building addresses, meeting-room details, recorder design and methods to encrypt or remotely access recordings.
  • OpenAI has terminated Alfozan, says it has no evidence of inappropriate access to model weights, source code, or customer data, and federal counterintelligence units continue to investigate the incident as part of broader efforts to protect sensitive AI research.
