FBI Arrests OpenAI Engineer Over Hidden Recorder in Executive Conference Room

The Justice Department says the device targeted confidential executive meetings, prompting a federal counterintelligence response.

Overview

  • OpenAI security discovered an encrypted, thumb-sized audio recorder plugged into a USB port behind a television in an executive conference room on Sept. 30 after investigators say it was installed about Sept. 28.
  • Federal agents arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national employed at OpenAI, on Oct. 9 and he made an initial federal court appearance on Oct. 13 with a detention hearing set for Oct. 19.
  • Prosecutors say evidence includes CCTV placing Alfozan near the room, his use of an internal productivity tool to check meeting locations and calendars, chatbot prompts tied to his spouse about building and hiding recorders, and a second similar device found in a bag with his wallet and ID.
  • OpenAI says it used its own AI models to analyze forensic images of the device, traced the source, referred the matter to the FBI, terminated the employee, and has found no indication that model weights, source code, or customer data were exfiltrated.
  • Officials have framed the case as a counterintelligence priority that highlights insider threats to advanced AI research and could prompt tighter vetting, access controls, and oversight of sensitive work at AI labs.
