Faulty Valve Causes Ammonia Leak at Mumbai Dairy Plant, Containment Complete

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has cordoned off the plant for a detailed probe into the valve malfunction.

Overview

  • The leak began at around 9:12 pm on July 23 from a faulty valve on a 3,000 kg ammonia tank in Mahananda Dairy’s Goregaon (East) refrigeration unit.
  • Mumbai Fire Brigade firefighters, police, 108 ambulance services, HAZMAT teams and BMC ward staff rapidly isolated the valve and disconnected the plant’s power supply.
  • Responders neutralized escaping ammonia with sealant and high-pressure water lines while transferring roughly 15–20 kg of residual gas to a secure reservoir.
  • No injuries or casualties were reported, and plant staff were evacuated as a precaution with the perimeter cordoned off.
  • BMC officials have secured the site and launched a probe into the valve malfunction alongside a review of the dairy’s ammonia handling licence.
