Fault in 220 kV Infosys–Pegasus Line Leaves 52,000 Without Power in Pune’s Hinjewadi

Low-voltage users have regained power through rerouted lines, with high-capacity clients on rotational supply pending full repairs

While electricity was restored to most residential areas by early Monday morning, several IT firms across Pune’s technology hub are still receiving supply in five-hour staggered cycles and MSETCL officials claiming that power supply will be restored not before Wednesday.    (HT)

The outage affected over 12,000 low-tension (LT) domestic consumers and 91 high-tension (HT) industrial consumers, including several IT companies, industrial units, and two ultra-high-voltage consumers, Infosys and Nextra.   (HT)

Overview

  • The cable fault struck at around 2:10 pm on Sunday just after a scheduled maintenance window closed, severing the Infosys–Pegasus 220 kV link near Hinjewadi Phase 2.
  • MSEDCL engineers executed emergency rerouting to restore electricity to all low-voltage residential and commercial consumers by 4 am Monday.
  • Ninety-one high-voltage industrial clients and two extra-high-voltage users, including Infosys and Nextra, remain on staggered supply until the damaged cable is repaired by Wednesday.
  • The outage disrupted 25 distribution feeders across Pimpri and Mulshi divisions, causing work-from-home interruptions, traffic snarls and communication gaps for urban residents.
  • Officials say the incident underscores the vulnerability of Pune’s ageing underground high-tension network and has intensified calls for accelerated infrastructure upgrades.
