Father Jailed for Manslaughter of Baby Son Shaken in 2018

The court accepted expert evidence of non-accidental injuries, crediting time previously served.

Overview

  • Liverpool Crown Court sentenced Mehmet Tufan to six-and-a-half years, reduced to account for a prior two-year term for related grievous bodily harm in 2019.
  • Judge Andrew Menary KC told Tufan his son died because of his “highly abnormal handling” and called the assault a violent act against a helpless baby.
  • Prosecutors detailed jealous messages about his partner’s night out, a delay of at least 20 minutes before calling 999, and an initial false claim about a hair in the baby’s throat.
  • Tufan later admitted shaking five-week-old Leo with considerable force and throwing him onto a bed, and he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in July 2025.
  • Doctors found extensive brain, spinal and retinal injuries that left Leo blind and profoundly disabled, and complications led to his death in December 2022.
