Father Found Dead on Maine’s Mount Katahdin; Search Continues for Daughter

Searchers are scouring Baxter State Park with K-9 units, thermal-imaging helicopters after discovering Tim Keiderling’s body near the summit.

Overview

  • 58-year-old Tim Keiderling and his 28-year-old daughter Esther from Ulster Park, New York, went missing June 1 after departing Abol Campground for a Mount Katahdin summit hike.
  • Park rangers launched a search on June 2 when their vehicle was found parked at the day-use lot on the Abol Trail.
  • A Maine Warden Service K-9 team located Tim Keiderling’s body on June 3 around 2:45 p.m. on the Tableland near the summit.
  • More than 30 game wardens joined Maine Forest Service and Army National Guard helicopters outfitted with infrared thermal imaging to continue the search for Esther Keiderling.
  • Hunt and Abol Trails remain closed for the operation and authorities ask anyone near Baxter State Park’s summit between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on June 1 to contact Houlton State Police.
