Father Dies After Car Submerges in Indianapolis Pond as Officers Rescue Two Children

Investigators have not determined why the vehicle entered the retention pond.

  • The crash occurred shortly after midnight on Jan. 13 at 4000 Pendleton Way near I-465 and Pendleton Pike.
  • Four IMPD officers went into frigid water, pulled a man and two children from a fully submerged car, and began CPR.
  • The father was transported to Eskenazi Hospital and was pronounced dead after arrival.
  • An 8-year-old and a 9-year-old were taken to Riley Hospital for Children, where both are listed in stable condition.
  • Lawrence police and Indianapolis fire crews assisted with rope bags and divers, and several officers were evaluated and are reported to be OK.
