Father Chris Riley, Youth Off The Streets Founder, Dies at 70

A champion for disadvantaged youth, he built a charity that still serves thousands nationwide.

  • Riley died on August 1 at age 70 after a prolonged battle with type 2 diabetes.
  • He launched Youth Off The Streets in 1991 with a single food van in Sydney’s King’s Cross and grew it into a nationwide welfare organisation.
  • He led the charity as chief executive until 2020 and established its core services in crisis accommodation, counselling and education.
  • His achievements earned him a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006, an honorary doctorate in 2010 and the Human Rights Medal in 2012.
