Father and Son Killed as Under-Construction Slab Collapses in Harsh Vihar

Officials say work to replace a roof and add a floor on an old single-storey structure likely triggered the failure and police have opened legal probes.

Overview

  • A slab of an under-construction house in Milan Garden, Harsh Vihar, gave way on Sunday evening and rescuers pulled two men from the rubble who were later declared dead.
  • The deceased were identified as 60-year-old Chanderpal and his 33-year-old son Vijay Kumar, who had taken the construction contract and were rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where they were declared brought dead.
  • Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service, DDMA, Civil Defence and local police mounted an overnight search and debris-clearance operation using cranes and heavy machinery.
  • Preliminary inspections by civic and police officials indicate the collapse occurred while a new lintel or RCC slab was being cast over an old brick roof, causing the weaker lower slab to fail.
  • The site is in an unauthorised-colony area and authorities have traced the property owner and started legal action; the incident adds to a series of recent Delhi collapses tied to illegal additions and weak enforcement.
