Fatal Shooting at Minneapolis Homeless Camp Days Before Scheduled Closure
Suspect arrested as police temporarily disperse residents; city council debates postponing closure.
- A 45-year-old man was shot to death at Camp Nenookaasi, a large homeless encampment in Minneapolis, days before it was scheduled to be removed.
- A suspect in the shooting was arrested near the encampment and a gun was recovered.
- After the shooting, police temporarily dispersed people from the encampment and brought in a Metro Transit bus to provide warmth and shelter.
- The encampment, which recently housed around 180 people, has both supporters and detractors. It was initially scheduled to close on Dec. 7 but the closure was postponed to Dec. 19.
- Several supporters of the encampment appeared at a recent public hearing to oppose its closure. A majority of City Council members last week asked Mayor Jacob Frey to wait until February to shut it down.
