Fatal Lisbon Bullfight Prompts Push to Halt Events at Campo Pequeno

The 22-year-old forcado died of traumatic brain injury after a debut goring at Lisbon’s arena.

Overview

  • Manuel Maria Trindade, of Forcados Amadores de São Manços, was gored and thrown into the barrier during his first pega on August 22 at Campo Pequeno.
  • He received first aid at the ring, was transferred on assisted ventilation, was diagnosed with brain death at Hospital São José, and later died after a cardiorespiratory arrest.
  • A 73-year-old spectator, Vasco Morais Batista, also died after medics detected a fatal aortic aneurysm and transferred him to Hospital Santa María.
  • After video of the incident spread widely, the PAN party submitted a resolution in Parliament to suspend bullfights at Campo Pequeno and repurpose the venue for cultural and sporting uses.
  • The forcados association and local officials offered condolences, and Trindade’s mother defended the tradition and said his organ donations will help seven people.
