Fatal Crashes and Lorry Fire Keep UK Motorways Shut as Investigations Continue

Ongoing investigations, repairs, diversions keep parts of the M57, M6 and M25 restricted after separate incidents since 10 September.

Overview

  • On the M57 near Knowsley, a man in his 60s died after a car left the northbound carriageway and caught fire, and a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop.
  • The M6 northbound in Cumbria remains closed between J37 (Kendal) and J39 (Shap) after an overturned lorry caught fire, with recovery, resurfacing and barrier repairs ongoing and a signed diversion in place.
  • A vehicle fire on the M25 anticlockwise near J16 led to hours-long disruption and emergency resurfacing, with three lanes closed for repairs and severe delays reported toward J17.
  • Surrey Police referred an M23 fatality to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after a woman in her 50s was pronounced dead and prior police contact was confirmed days earlier.
  • Further disruptions included a one-vehicle HGV crash on the A1(M) near Newton Aycliffe with the driver taken to hospital, a three-vehicle A4 collision at Clatford where a person was cut free, car fires on the A1058 in Wallsend with one patient taken to hospital, and separate M4 delays.
