Overview
- The Bald Range fire, which was detected on Aug. 7, exploded within hours and has spread rapidly along the western shore of Okanagan Lake, forcing roughly 20,000 people from Summerland, Peachland and nearby communities.
- One death has been confirmed after an 80-year-old woman tried to evacuate her Meadow Valley home, and the tiny community of Faulder was largely razed though officials cannot complete a damage survey because the zone remains unsafe.
- Provincial authorities declared a state of emergency and arranged thousands of hotel rooms and group beds while Ottawa approved federal shelter support and the Canadian Armed Forces were placed on standby for possible deployment.
