Overview

  • On June 20, about 40 farmers used tractors to block vehicle access to Futuroscope in Poitiers while allowing pedestrians to enter.
  • Organizers from Coordination rurale de la Vienne, FNSEA and Jeunes Agriculteurs called the protest to oppose a pending vote on reducing water extraction volumes.
  • Protesters warn that HMUC orientations, which dictate funding for irrigation reservoirs, could shrink farmers’ rights to withdraw water and endanger planned reserves.
  • François Turpeau, president of Coordination rurale de la Vienne, said the measures could cost the Clain basin €27 million annually and more than 200 agricultural jobs.
  • The HMUC studies aim to plan sustainable water management by balancing agricultural, industrial, drinking water and environmental needs under climate change.
