Fantasy World Flat Receives Grade II Listing

Ron Gittins' artistic transformation of his rented flat into a unique fantasy world has been officially recognized with Grade II listed status.

  • Ron Gittins, an untrained artist, transformed his rented flat in Oxton, Wirral into a fantasy world, featuring lion and minotaur fireplaces, which has now been granted Grade II listed status.
  • The flat, known as Ron's Place, has become the first example of Outsider Art to receive such recognition in the UK, following the efforts of Gittins' niece and volunteers to preserve it.
  • Support from former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and a donation last year enabled the Wirral Arts and Culture Community Land Trust to purchase the property, aiming to inspire other artists.
  • The listing by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, advised by Historic England, marks Ron's Place as a testament to Gittins' unique artistic vision over four decades.
  • Plans are in place to eventually open Ron's Place to the public for guided tours, offering a rare glimpse into Gittins' immersive and creative world.
