Fani Willis Defends Trump Case in Combative Georgia Senate Testimony

The panel investigates her conduct without any authority to sanction her.

Overview

  • Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis testified on Dec. 17 before a Republican-led Georgia Senate Special Committee after dropping a yearlong court fight over a subpoena enabled by a new law clarifying one-chamber subpoena power.
  • Willis blasted the inquiry as intimidation, cited thousands of threats and racist harassment, and had her microphone briefly cut as she defended bringing racketeering charges over efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 results.
  • Questioning centered on her hiring and past romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, which courts said created an appearance of impropriety and led to her disqualification from the case.
  • After Willis was removed, Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council chief Peter Skandalakis assumed control and moved to abandon the prosecution; a Fulton County judge dismissed the RICO case on Nov. 26, following earlier plea deals by several defendants.
  • Senators also pressed about possible contacts with Washington officials and the Jan. 6 committee, which Willis framed as routine efforts to obtain information, while the committee said it will continue its investigation and produce a report.
