FanDuel to Impose 50-Cent Fee on Illinois Bets to Offset New State Tax

It follows a new per-wager tax that charges 25 cents per bet on the first 20 million wagers; 50 cents thereafter, stoking worries that recreational bettors will face higher costs.

Overview

  • Effective July 1, Illinois will levy a per-wager tax of 25 cents for the first 20 million bets and 50 cents on each additional wager.
  • FanDuel will begin charging a 50-cent transaction fee on every bet placed in Illinois starting September 1, 2025, and will drop the fee if the state reverses the tax.
  • DraftKings, which together with FanDuel accounts for about 75% of Illinois sports betting wagers, has said it plans to announce its own surcharge soon.
  • Citizens Gaming analyst Jordan Bender estimates the new tax will cost FanDuel roughly $86 million and DraftKings about $79 million in 2026.
  • Flutter CEO Peter Jackson and the Sports Betting Alliance warn that higher per-bet charges could drive recreational bettors toward unregulated operators.
