Overview

• Smoke built up shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday while the amphibious dock landing ship was in General Dynamics NASSCO’s East Harbor Drive facility adjacent to Naval Base San Diego.
• Fedfire, San Diego Fire-Rescue and NASSCO Fire responded quickly and dispelled the smoke aboard the vessel.
• About a dozen Navy personnel experienced mild to moderate smoke inhalation and were transported to local hospitals for evaluation.
• All affected individuals had been treated and released by Sunday morning, according to a NASSCO spokesperson.
• The incident occurred near the ship’s gym on the third deck as the 30-year-old vessel undergoes a $64 million repair and modernization project.
