Family Sues Denver Public Schools Over Teen's Fatal Shooting Outside East High

The lawsuit claims the removal of armed police officers from the school contributed to the death of 16-year-old Luis Garcia.

Luis Garcia, a junior at East High School, was shot in his car outside the school on February 13, 2023, and died from his injuries two weeks later.
The wrongful death lawsuit alleges that Denver Public Schools (DPS) failed to protect students by removing School Resource Officers (SROs) from the campus.
The lawsuit cites the Claire Davis School Safety Act, which allows parents to sue if a school fails to provide reasonable care to protect students from foreseeable violence.
The Denver School Board had removed SROs in 2020 following nationwide protests but reinstated them after Garcia's death and another shooting at the school in March 2023.
No arrests have been made in connection to Garcia's death, and the Denver District Attorney's Office has not filed any charges.
