Overview

• The family of Captain Chander Narain Singh handed over his gallantry and service medals to the Garhwal Rifles Regiment on his 60th death anniversary in Dharamsala.
• Lt Gen Dinesh Singh Rana, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command and Colonel of the Garhwal Rifles, formally received the Maha Vir Chakra and other awards from Singh’s brother, Sukhdev Singh.
• Singh was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for leading a night assault against infiltrators in the Poonch Sector on August 5, 1965, before succumbing to injuries from enemy fire.
• The medals have been designated for preservation and exhibition at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre Museum in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand.
• The ceremony was attended by veterans and serving personnel, reaffirming regimental traditions that connect past acts of bravery with future soldiers.
