Family Hires Lawyers After British Woman Dies at Riu Cabo Verde Resort

Irwin Mitchell will investigate alleged hygiene failures at the Riu Cabo Verde following Elena Walsh’s death.

Overview

  • Elena Walsh, 64, became ill on August 8 during a family holiday in Sal with vomiting, diarrhoea and heavy sweating, and she died in hospital on August 10.
  • Her husband, Patrick, alleges the five-star hotel served tepid or undercooked food and that pool water discoloured as guests stayed at the swim-up bar.
  • He says the medical care felt chaotic, with the family told hours later that her organs were failing and nothing more could be done.
  • Irwin Mitchell has been instructed to examine her care and conditions at the resort, saying it represents more than 1,500 UK travellers who reported illness in Cape Verde over three years, including over 200 at this hotel.
  • An inquest is expected to establish the cause of death, and the Riu Cabo Verde has not responded to requests for comment.
